📘 Participles

What is a Participle?

A participle is a verb form that works like an adjective.
It describes a noun.

Example:

  • The crying baby needs milk.
  • The broken window needs repair.

Here crying and broken describe nouns, so they are participles.


Types of Participles

There are three types of participles.

1️⃣ Present Participle
2️⃣ Past Participle
3️⃣ Perfect Participle


1️⃣ Present Participle

Present participles end with –ing.

They describe something happening now.

Examples

  • The running boy is my brother.
  • The barking dog is loud.
  • The shining sun is bright.

Here the participles are:
running, barking, shining


2️⃣ Past Participle

Past participles usually end with –ed, –en, –d, –t.

They describe completed actions.

Examples

  • The broken chair is old.
  • The fallen leaves are dry.
  • The written letter is on the table.

Participles:
broken, fallen, written


3️⃣ Perfect Participle

Perfect participles show an action completed before another action.

Structure:

Having + past participle

Examples

  • Having finished the work, he went home.
  • Having eaten dinner, she slept.
