- List the Major difference between Weather and Climate?
Weather | Climate |
Weather is state of atmosphere at a particular place and time. | Climate is a long term pattern of weather in a particular area. |
Weather keeps on changing from day to day and hours to hours. | Climate prevails for months |
Ex: Sunny, Cloudy, Windy etc. | Ex: Summer, Winter, Monsoon and Spring. |
Study of Weather is called Meteorology. | Study of climate is called as Climatology. |
Scientist who studies about Weather is called as Meteorologist. | Scientist who studies about climate is called as Climatologist. |
- Define Temperature of atmosphere?
- Temperature is the degree of hotness and coldness of the air.
- Temperature of atmosphere not only changes between day and night, but also from season to season.
- Summer is hotter than winter.
- Define Insolation?
Solar radiation is the heat which we receive on the Earth’s surface. It is termed as Insolation.
- What are Heat zones of the Earth?
- Earth does not receive same amount of heat everywhere.
- It is maximum at equator and minimum at Poles.
- Due to these 3 distinct heat zones of created.
- Torrid zone, Frigid zone and Temperate zone.
- List the difference between Torrid, Temperate and Frigid zone?

- How Temperature is measured?
- Temperature is measured using instrument called Thermometer.
- Thermometer can measure the temperature of moving air.
- Two common scales of Thermometer are Celsius and Fahrenheit.
- The difference between maximum and minimum temperature is termed as range of thermometer.
- How the atmosphere is heated up?
- Atmosphere does not get directly heated by the rays of Sun.
- Very little solar radiation is absorbed by atmosphere and it passes through different layers of Earth.
- Sun rays heats the surface of Earth.
- Contact of air with heat surface of Earth warms up lower layer of atmosphere.
- Define Atmospheric pressure?
The force exerted by column of air due to its weight at particular place on Earth surface is called as Atmospheric pressure.
- What is Barometer?
- The instrument that is used to measure the Atmospheric pressure is called as Barometer.
- There are 2 types of Barometer.
- Mercury barometer, Aneroid barometer.
- Atmospheric pressure is measured in millibar (mb)
- Write the difference between Mesosphere and Thermosphere?
Mesosphere | Thermosphere |
Mesosphere lies above Stratosphere | Thermosphere lies above Mesosphere. |
It extends from 50 km to 80 km | It extends from 80 km to 400 km. |
This layer burns the meteors that comes from outer space. | This layer contains the electrically charged particles called Ions. |
Mesopause is the upper part of the layer that separates it from Thermosphere. | Ionopause is the upper part of the layer that separates it from Exosphere. |
- Write a short note on Ionosphere?
- Thermosphere is also called as Ionosphere due to the presence of electrically charged particle called Ions.
- Radio waves transmitted from Earth are reflected back to the Earth by this layer This layer is responsible for long distance wireless and satellite communication.
- Write a short note on Exosphere?
- Exosphere is the uppermost layer of atmosphere.
- This layer extends up to 1600 km
- The temperature in this layer is 4500 degrees Celsius and density of air is low.
- This layer merges with the Inter planetary space.
- Define Greenhouse effect?
During day, carbon dioxide present in atmosphere absorbs the heat and prevents the earth from becoming too cool at night This phenomenon is called as Greenhouse effect.
What are the advantages of Atmosphere?
- Atmosphere gives us oxygen to breathe.
- Nitrogen and carbon dioxide are needed by plants for their growth. It protect us from the meteors and debris falling from the spaceIt act as greenhouse and controls the extreme of temperature during day and night.
- The weather and climatic changes are due to the presence of atmosphere.
- It protect us from harmful UV rays.
