1. Maps are used when we want to find information about the places on Earth
2. The word Map comes from the latin word “mappa” meaning Cloth

5. Define Map and its advantages?
· Map is a representation of Earth/part of it on a flat surface
· Maps are better than globes because they show large areas on a single piece of paper to compare cities, countries and other places.
· Map can be rolled/ folded, stored and carried around easily
6. What are three types of maps?
According to the function, maps are categorized into Political, Physical and Thematic
7. What are the Political map show?
· Political map shows the countries of the world.
· It also shows parts of nation, states, borders between states.
8. What is a Physical map?
· Physical map is a small scale map
· It shows the Topography of the places such as mountains, valleys, rivers, plains etc.
9. What are the Thematic map?
· Thematic comes from word “ theme” meaning Idea/ Topic
· Thematic map also called as Distribution map.
· Distribution means dividing into parts/ shares
· These map represent weather, roads, distribution of population, rainfall, crops and minerals
10. What are components of map?
Main components of map are distance, direction and conventional symbols
11. How to measure distance on map?
· Distance between any two points on a map may be measured using centimeters in scale
· Scale of map is used to calculate the actual distance on ground
· Depending on the purpose, maps of different scales are drawn.
12. Difference of Small scale map and large scale map?
Small scale Map

It represents large areas of Earth
It represents small area of the Earth
It is used to show small amount of detail about large area
It is used to show large amount of information about small area
Example for small scale map are political map in atlas
Example for large scale map is city guide map. They show details about the streets, important buildings of neighbourhood

16. What are the conventional signs and symbols?
· Conventional signs and symbols are usually small pictures of object, they represent.
· Using these symbols, we get maximum information about a place.
· These symbols are used in large scale map.
· There is no confusion about the sign and symbols, since they are same throughout the world.
17. What is Map legend?
· Map legends explain the symbols used on map
· It is called as legend since it tells the whole story about the map.
· Map legend are also called as map key since it explains meaning of map symbol.
18. Name some colour patterns on small scale map?
1. Yellow = Cultivated area
2. Green = Wooded land covered with forest
3. Black = Dry rivers, streams, bank, well
4. Blue = All perennial water bodies
5. Red = Roads, buildings, settlements
6. White = Barren land
7. Brown = Contour line, stony waste, sand features
19. What is Atlas?
· Atlas is a collection of maps of the world, continents, or selected countries.
· Atlas shows information and diagram of Earth in space, geographical features, population data.
20. Some maps are not drawn according to scale. They are called as Sketches.
21. Maps drawn at very large scale are called as Plans.
