What are the common features between living and Non-living things?
· Both are made up of matter.
· Both are made up of structural unit.
What is the structural unit of non-living things?
Molecule is the structural unit of non living thing.
What is the structural unit of living things?
· The structural unit of living things is Cell
· Cells vary in size and shape.
· Cells can be seen under microscope
What are the various characteristics of living things?
· Living things move
· Living things are made up of cells.
· Living things grow
· Living things have definite lifespan
· Living things respond to stimulus.
· Living things food
· Living things excrete
· Living things respire
Why do living things move?
· Animals move around in search of food, shelter, escape from enemies
· Living things that do not move around in search of food & shelter is plants.
· Some movement in certain plants are observed. Ex Touch me not plant (Chhuimui) closes its leaves when we touch.
· Sunflower turns in the direction of Sun.
List few non- living things that move?
Non-living things that move are car, aeroplane, train etc.
What is cell and how do living things grow?
· All Living things are made up of tiny units called cells
· Amoeba, paramecium, some bacteria yeast are made up of single cell.
· Bigger animals are multicellular, i.e. they are made up of various cells & shape.
· Living things increase in size as they grow.
· Living things grow by the division of cells inside the body.
· Non-living things grow by addition of material from outside. a crystal E.g., Heap of land, growth in crystal
· Animals Stop growth after they reach certain age & size.
· Plants continue to grow throughout their life
Write a short note on living things reproduction?
· Living things reproduce
· Living things that give birth to young ones, are called as viviparous Eg: mammals, Humans, whales
· Living things that give birth by hatching egg are oviparous e.g.: Birds, reptiles.
· Plants are reproduced through seeds.
Write a short note on living things life span?
· Living things have definite life span Ex: Bacteria 20 minutes.
· Tortoise for 120-150 years.
· Bristle cone pine for Thousands of years.
How do living things respond through stimuli?
· Living things respond to stimulus.
· Various stimuli are temperature, touch, light and sound.
· Touch is stimulus exhibited by Mimosa plant respond by folding its leaves.
· Phototropism means plant growing towards the direction of light.
· Plant roots & stem exhibit Geotropism
· Root grow towards the earth, stem grow against the earth.
How living things lead the life process?
· Food is needed by LT to grow, to move and to carry out life process.
· Autotrophs are green plants that can prepare their own food.
· Heterotrophs depend on autotrophs for food.
What is Excretion?
· Living things remove waste, from the body to the form of urine, sweat, exhaled as carbon dioxide. This process is called excretion.
· Plants excrete water vapour, carbon dioxide through small pores called stomata.
· Some plants remove waste products in the form of secretions.
What is Respiration?
· Breathing in 0₂ & breathing out co₂ is called as respiration.
· Air we breathe in passes to lungs.
· Oxygen absorbed and is used by body; carbon dioxide is expelled as waste.
· Oxygen combines with food and give energy
How do various organisms breathe?
· Earthworm breathe through skin, cockroach through spiracles. Fish through gills, dissolved o₂ in water.
· In plants, respiration takes place thorough stomata
· Plants take in carbon dioxide & give out oxygen during Photosynthesis.
· Respiration takes place day & night Photosynthesis takes place only in day
What is Species?
Grouping of similar living organism that belongs to same habitat, behaviour is Known as Species.
Members of Species has
· Same body parts
· Live in same habitat
· Eat same kind of food.
· Reproduce among themselves
